8:15 – 10:45 AM The Male Factor: What Every Woman Lawyer Needs
to Know about How Men and Clients View Women
Attorneys in the Workplace
Shaunti Feldhahn, Author and Speaker
Moderator:
Jane Pigott, R3 Group LLC
Panelist:
Alan Bryan, Wal-Mart Legal
Margaret “Meg” Campbell, Ogletree, Deakins,
Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C.
Lauren Freeman-Bosworth, Pitney Bowes Inc.
Attorneys have a professional responsibility to represent
their clients well. And yet a host of documented,
quantified, gender-based misunderstandings all too often
interfere with that duty, without the attorney ever
realizing it. While gender-based misunderstandings occur
among both men and women, this particular short course
is designed for female attorneys, who will often be working
with male counterparts. It provides female attorneys with
the knowledge they need about how different brain
processes influence the way in which they are perceived
by male clients, co-workers, judges, jurors, opposing
counsel, and clients represented by opposing counsel.
To represent their clients well, female attorneys need to
not only understand how men perceive emotion, but what
they view as ‘getting emotional’ to begin with. Certain
signals of defensiveness, taking things personally,
personality conflicts, even certain ways of pressing a point
are all examples of approaches that can be misperceived as
based solely on feelings and not logic and thus undermine
the female attorney if she is not aware of it.
In this session, bestselling author Shaunti Feldhahn will
provide some fascinating ‘food for thought’ in a candid
discussion about the findings of her new book, The Male
Factor: The Unwritten Rules, Misperceptions and Secret
Beliefs of Men in the Workplace. The book is based on
ten years of rigorous research, including extensive research
for and among attorneys, and is tailored for the findings
that specifically apply to the legal profession.
Following Shaunti’s presentation, a diverse group of legal
panelists will discuss effective strategies that women attorneys
can utilize for creating coalitions to more effectively represent
their clients and for professional success.
10:45 – 11:00 AM Break
11:00 – 12:15 PM Track: A) Do You Want to Make More Money?
Negotiating Your Compensation
Jane Pigott, R3 Group LLC
The 2012 Partner Compensation Survey reported
that men law firm partners significantly outpace
women in compensation ($734,000 to 497,000) and
the gap is widening. The Seventh Annual NAWL
Survey had a similar finding: women partners’
compensation lags that of men partners, with the
widest gap being at the equity partner level. This
session will focus on the two things that will be
necessary to close this gap: (1) law firm leaders
addressing the compensation process structures
that contribute to the gap and (2) women partners
strategically putting themselves in a position to
increase their compensation.
Track: B) In-House Counsel – Toolkit for Training Your
Business Clients
Sandy Cassidy, Prudential Financial
Veronica Davis, AT&T
Annette Frawley, General Mills Inc.
Joanne W. Suh, Intel Corporation
It has been said that when your only tool is a
hammer, every problem looks like a nail. A
diverse panel of in-house counsel across
industries will explain the various strategies/
toolkits that they employ to assist their business
clients in understanding and dealing with legal
issues. Topics to be addressed include educating
clients as to confidentiality and regulatory
requirements as well as how to recognize when
an issue needs to be brought to the attention
of the Legal Department.

8:00 – 9:15 AM Track: A) From Daunting to Doable: How to Build Positive
Client Relationships and Become a Rainmaker in
the Process
Karen Kahn, Threshold Advisors
Client advocacy happens both within and outside
the board room and the court room. Go back to
your office with specific actions on how to
become a more effective client advocate by
building positive client relationships—the number
of actions you take, and take frequently, will
determine how successful you can be. This
workshop will provide you with a clear plan,
specific and easy to execute on. You will start by
thinking about the big picture and engaging in a
fun exercise to begin to construct of list of
individuals who have the ability to help you
develop client relationships. Next we will discuss
their value proposition to you and ways you can
be valuable to them. Finally you will have the
opportunity to practice a variety of scenarios
that you have said make relationship building
challenging (impossible) and learn ways to use
your style and personality to foster these
important connections. Join us and learn the
what, who and how of client development.
Track: B) Ethical Issues for Inside and Outside
Counsel
Christine M. Kong, Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP
Marygrace Schaeffer, DecisionQuest
Technology has transformed the practice of law in
fundamental ways. New modes of communication, the
emergence of increasingly sophisticated devices that
store and transmit information and the changing practice
of law pose ethical challenges for both in-house and
outside counsel. DecisionQuest, a trial and jury consulting
firm with more than thirty years of experience in high-
stakes litigation, will lead the audience in an interactive
discussion of ethical issues faced by in-house and outside
counsel in the age of electronic communication and social
media, including rules of professional responsibility applicable
to use of technology, preserving client confidences and
client development. Attendees will be able to weigh in
electronically with their views on the various scenarios.
Track: C) Healthy Relationships for High Achievers:
Obtain Personal Satisfaction and Professional Success
Kimberly Miller, Miller and Miller LLC
Lawyers work high stress jobs in a high stress world.
The rewards of the legal profession can be great, but
so are the pressures. And when a lawyer suffers from
too much stress, the lawyer’s client relationships and
effectiveness in handling client matters often suffer as
well. Conversely, as discussed in this session, research
indicates that strong relationships can lead to happiness,
less stress, and better success in all professions, including
the law. Strong personal and professional relationships
can even increase your effectiveness as a client advocate
as well as contribute to the success of your law firm or
company. Come learn the skills necessary for developing
healthy relationships and avoiding the potential for
diminished ability to effectively represent your clients.
9:15 – 10:30 AM Track: A) From Daunting to Doable, Building Positive Client

10:45 – 12:00 PM Plenary Session: You Don't Have to Move the Universe to
Change the World for One Child - Pro Bono Opportunities in
Children's Law
Moderator:
Angela Vigil, Baker & McKenzie
Speakers:
Nicole Bryant
Jennifer Kifer US District Court Middle District of Florida
Shobha Lakshmi Mahadev Illinois Coalition for the Fair
Sentencing of Children
Meghan Magruder King & Spalding
How can a lawyer do meaningful pro bono work in
an already full life? Through bite sized pro bono
cases (for example, 20 hours or less), lawyers can
have a real impact on a child’s life. Children’s legal
cases might not need a long time to resolve and yet
their resolution can change the course of a child’s
entire life. Many of these cases are administrative
which can provide non-litigators with opportunities
as well. Panelists will outline several bite size pro
bono opportunities for audience members including
securing benefits for a child such as Social Security
Income, representing children in expulsion cases
which can mean the difference between a child
graduating high school or not, representing children
in immigration cases and more. Panelists will explore
these bite sized pro bono cases and discuss the
impact that a lawyer even spending a few hours of
time might have on a young person’s life.
